  19. I am on panix.com, and run kermit on both ends, ie
  20. here at home on my sparcstation 5 (solaris 7) and
  21. there, on EITHER their pc's running netbsd,
  22. OR their sparc-something, sunos 4.x.

  24. Several problems:

  26. 1: my us robotics 56k cheapo modem, they (panix)
  27. say(s), should have some DIFFERENT special-for-panix
  28. init string.
  29.  
  30. a.  do YOU know the proper init string for panix?
  31.  
  32. b.  how do I get the local kermit to do it automatically
  33.      (setup the modem a la panix) WHEN (and ONLY when)
  34.      I want to dial into panix?
  35.  
  36.     (Yes, I could read this 620-page book you've written,
  37.         excellent, etc, but man, I'm just under information
  38.         overload, not as young as I once was (58 now), and
  39.         am not as easily able to fend off the devil in all
  40.         those details.... )

  42. c.  Having GREAT difficulty downloading .gz-files (of course
  43.      I set -i!), although can usually do it ok if UN-compressed.

  45.      Either kermit just stops in the middle, generating an error
  46.      every 10 or 20 seconds, or it finishes, but the checksums
  47.      don't match (yes, am using the correct checksum programs,
  48.      eg /usr/5bin/sum on sunos 4.x vs just "sum" on solaris --
  49.      is how I did it on netcom (shell, long gone now), worked
  50.      just fine.

  52.       Sometimes, those little slashes go across all across
  53.       the %-done line, but hangs at the end.

  55. d.   The Z etc cmds that kermit polls for -- to stop downloading
  56.      the file (via "x"?), or the one for the entire group --
  57.      doesn't seem to work -- kermit (the remote one) does
  58.      see the char, but after telling me, just goes on back
  59.      to being hung.

  61.      UNFORTUNATELY, a ^c gets me back to the kermit prompt
  62.      on my LOCAL kermit!!!

  64.      How in the world do you direct commands to ONLY the
  65.      REMOTE kermit?  The last thing I want (man, are those
  66.      5 words ambiguous!) is to be disconnected from the
  67.      remote machine!

  73.      totally obvious to anyone who really understands
  74.      kermit.  But I work alone, access to info only via
  75.      usenet, email, and www (and VERY occasional conference),
  76.      so I rely on you.

  80. g.   If you do want me to read a few pages, I do have
  81.       the c-kermit book (ref manual, not tutorial).

  84. as I'm in nearby New Rochelle.  But no way I can
  85. afford the "consulting" price, no way at all.
